hand painted tole ware: graining and trompe l'oeil
This catchpot was one of a range of hand painted decorative accessories designed and produced in our Warwickshire studio for Golfar and Hughes of London. This item is hand painted on metal and is referred to as painted tole ware or tolerie. In this example the specialist decoration technique known as wood graining and the fine art technique know as trompe l'oeil have been combined.
Historically some of the best examples were produced between 1730 and 1820 in Pontypool in Wales. Originally these were initially painted in the oriental style and later with landscapes.
